In the past couple of months we have learned that exposure to the mineral erionite increased the risk of developing mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer most often associated with asbestos exposure. The mineral was exposed to a whole Turkish community who were forced to move and now the mineral has been found in the gravel of road materials in North Dakota.
Erionite, a mineral closely related to asbestos the main culprit for mesothelioma, occurs naturally and is often found in volcanic ash that has been altered by weathering and ground water. Erionite like asbestos, forms brittle, wool-like fibrous masses in the hollows of rock formations which when inhaled increases the risk for mesothelioma. Erionite deposits are present in several parts of the U.S., however, there is no risk unless there is exposure close to the surface of gravel.
There is a concern for increased risk of mesothelioma for persons exposed in North Dakota.
