mesothelioma maryland
The diagnosis of mesothelioma is shocking, but it does not mean that you have to give up on taking care of yourself. Most people do not experience symptoms for several decades, so starting or continuing an exercise program is a beneficial practice.
Healthy enjoyable exercise as well as good nutrition is essential to anyone’s health. They are both a way to take charge of your health and improve your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
Getting Started
If you know or suspect that you have been exposed to mesothelioma, inform your doctor immediately. At the same time, talk to your doctor about your fitness and exercise goals, especially if you are starting a new program.
One of the reasons people do not stick with new exercise programs is that they do not find them enjoyable. There are so many different fitness programs that there are bound to be several that fit with your lifestyle. As you choose an exercise plan, consider the following:
· Is the exercise comfortable and gentle on your body?
· Is the activity easily accessible?
· Do you enjoy it?
· Is there variety?
· Do you feel more energy and vitality afterwards?
If you feel pain in any way or if the exercise causes you any discomfort, discontinue the activity until you talk to your doctor. In order to have a well balanced fitness program, remember to mix it up. Diversity is key for success with exercise.
When developing your plan, try a variety of exercises that provide cardiovascular, strength-building, and flexibility. Yoga and walking are two ways to gently start a new routine. Begin slowly and gradually increase in strength and duration.
Boost Your Immune System
Cardiovascular exercise can boost your immune system, increase your energy, and improve your emotional outlook. Some studies show a decrease in the need for oxygen for patient’s suffering with lung disease. This is good to know when dealing with mesothelioma. Try aerobic fitness classes, dance classes, or bicycling, or check with your local health clubs for specialized cancer programs in your community.
Additional Support for Your Body
As a mesothelioma survivor, you are bound to have good days and bad. If you are not feeling well, that is a good time to honor your body’s need to rest. Stretching may be beneficial, or you could choose to have a massage. Acupuncture may also help you relax, regroup, and refocus your energy.
Good nutrition that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meat gives your body the fuel it needs to function optimally. This holds true for everyone, especially the cancer patient. In addition, two often overlooked resources are relaxation and meditation. A healthy fitness program can help you take your mind off your illness and focus it on living well.
