Parker, AZ receives $56,000 Grant for Asbestos Removal

The town of Parker, Arizona, received a $56,000 grant from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to clean asbestos out of some of the town’s buildings. The town hall/police station, senior center and library are the three building that will receive the funds. The buildings will be renovated into businesses that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A grant had already been received to convert the three buildings into handicap accessible buildings but the grant could not be used towards asbestos removal. Two of the buildings were in built in the 60s and the third was built in the1980s.

Asbestos was used mainly in the 1960s and 70s as a fire resistant insulation. However, the fibrous material is the main cause of mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung that is hard to detect and incurable. Once inhaled mesothelioma may not appear for decades, so many do not even know they have been exposed until it is too late.
