Operation Safe Driver campaign, a collaborative effort among the US government and the trucking industry, promotes safe driving among commercial truck and passenger vehicle drivers, celebrated their fourth year this past October. The program was created with the intention of decreasing the number of fatal accidents that involve commercial vehicles. Currently the death toll sits at 5,000 lives each year.
This year the event included roadside inspections of carriers who have repeatedly hired unsafe drivers and who also continue to operate their vehicles after receiving out-of-service notices from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), both of which violate federal trucking regulations. The regulations are meant to protect the safety of drivers who have to share the road with other drivers. Commercial carriers are notoriously known for violating federal regulations which include hours-of-service rules and load restrictions and many of these violations result in horrific accidents.
The campaign also focused on the education of drivers in passenger vehicles which provided safety tips for avoiding accidents with semi-trucks. The majority of accidents involving passenger vehicles and big trucks are due to driver error-of either vehicle. However, occupants in the passenger vehicle are more likely to be seriously injured or killed in the accident.
