Children Largest Group to Suffer from TBI’s

As traumatic brain injuries are making headway with the National Football League (NFL) seeking to prevent concussions and the U.S. military struggling to cope with the injuries it is surprising to hear that children are actually the largest group of American who suffer from TBI’s.  Children make up a third of the 1.7 million Americans who suffer serious brain injuries each year.

Although injured service members, as well as pro athletes, are helping to raise awareness, people should be aware that accidents can happen anywhere to anyone. The CDC states that kids up to the age of 4 have the highest instance of emergency room visits for TBI’s, about 1,256 per 100,000 patient visits.

The total number of cases continues to rise. Last year there were 1.4 million cases but this year the number of instances rose to a total of 1.7 million cases.  The CDC has stated that falls on and off of playing fields are a major cause of head injuries even more so than car accidents.

Many states are starting to ban kids from returning to games after they’ve been hit in the head during a game or match.  Symptoms from concussions include long-term consequences for sufferers and problems with thinking, perception, language and emotions.
