Mesothelioma threat through national fiber-optic initiative

Asbestos has put another stop to Australian advances. The National Broadband Network (NBN), a government owned company, has had to halt their progress towards a nationwide fiber installation due to the presence of asbestos.  With a massive plan to include 93% of the nation, NBN set about connecting the country through fiber-optic technology. Only 7% would be left with other forms of internet and digital connectivity.

The plan included use of existing telegraph poles and underground conduits. About 25% of the new fiber would be hung from poles while the large majority would be buried in an existing underground infrastructure of ditches. However, asbestos was found to be present in the cement and building materials of included ditches and conduits.

Switching its primary focus from technology to safety, NBN administrators are now considering the best way to move forward. Exposing asbestos would threaten safety and health for workers and the public. Asbestos is known to cause severe respiratory conditions. Rare cancer mesothelioma is most associated with asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is characterized by malignant tumors in the lung ling and lining of other abdominal cavities. There are available mesothelioma treatments, but no known cure.

Costs associates with asbestos removal are high. Trained professionals with appropriate protective gear must test all potentially dangerous materials and them remove it without exposing the fibers. In this case, complexity had been added by trouble differentiating between asbestos and non-asbestos cement.

NBN spokeswoman Rhonda Griffin sounds optimistic. She said the “…costs of asbestos management has been factored in to our business case. Where asbestos is identified or suspected, NBN Co contracts the services of fully qualified asbestos experts to remove any aged asbestos-containing infrastructure and dispose of it as per all safeguards required under regulation. Independent hygienists are engaged to monitor any removal.”

Asbestos removal contractors are anticipating a busy season as this unexpected NBN situation redirects funds and efforts. Director of Sydney based asbestos removal company Alkene, Bill Snell said, “It’s going to be a major job actually.” He expects his firm and others to be busy.

There is a responsibility to the public in this case, which causes concern for many. A nationwide effort to connect a population may easily turn into a nationwide nightmare. With health and safety on the line, not all are so confident of NBN’s, and the government’s, ability to handle it.

Communications Electrical and Plumbing Union national secretary Peter Tighe said, “It’s obviously something we’ve got to be very careful about. You can’t just send somebody out and say, ‘Pull cables through’.”

The Truth About the National Deficit and Medical Malpractice

The bipartisan national debt commission thinks that reforming medical malpractice is a way to curb soaring health care costs and decrease the national debt, but let’s really look at the numbers here.

The panel says that reforming medical malpractice will save taxpayers $17 billion by 2020. This sounds like a big number until you realize that the United States spends $2.4 trillion dollars a year on health care. Medical liability costs are only 2.4% of that sitting right around at $55.6 billion. So, really this savings is just a fraction of a percent, but hey, any amount helps right?

No. Medical malpractice suits are supposed to prevent medical errors and compensate patients and their families for losses. The panel suggests creating a “health court” for medical malpractice, one that may streamline cases and reduce costs, but also may forgive errors as long as certain policies or equipment is used. This in turn would make medical errors a bigger problem. The United States’ goal should be a goal in which we not only focus on saving money but also where we offer the best care possible.

A common misconception of medical malpractice lawsuits is that they are unnecessary and are extremely unreasonable. However, recent data shows that the number of claims is actually on the decline and that the dollar amount requested has actually stabilized in the past ten years. There are many advances in health care that contribute to this decline including patient safety initiatives and improvements in health care. Large claims generally receive the most media attention but in reality they only compromise 0.3% of all claims.

National Mesothelioma Awareness Day Nationally Recognized!

On September 26th we celebrated National Mesothelioma Awareness Day, today the House of Representatives finally recognizes this day. H. Res 771, was introduced by Congresswoman Betty McCollom which urges the people of the United States to annually observe a National Mesothelioma Awareness day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

The passage of H. Res. 771 is important in the search for treatment and cure for mesothelioma. Currently, mesothelioma is an aggressive form of lung cancer that can lie dormant for 20 plus years. Many people that have been exposed to asbestos are not even aware that they have been exposed. Many Americans are still unaware of the dangers of exposure to this toxic substance and medical experts consider it one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of cancer.

Contact Legal View anytime to learn how you and loved ones can protect yourselves from asbestos. Contact LegalView for a free mesothelioma law consultation at 866-9LAW-NOW. Our operators are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. 1-866-952-9669.

October 17th Marks Beginning of National Radon Awareness Week

Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer. In an effort to raise awareness about the hazards of radon, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated October 17th through October 24th as National Radon Awareness Week.

According to James Gelina, President of the Air Quality Control Agency, “Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas formed from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water.” Though airborne levels of radon are typically diluted enough to not be harmful, high levels can congregate indoors. For those living in houses that reside in areas of high radon soil levels, this inhalation may eventually lead to lung cancer.

It is estimated that radon is responsible for 2.4 million global lung cancer deaths each year. In the United States, the dangerous gas is estimated to cause 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths annually.

Alarmingly, homes with excessively high levels of radon have been identified in virtually every county in the United States. In states such as Kansas, as many as one in four homes may have hazardous levels of radon. As a result of this, the EPA suggests that all homeowners have their homes checked for elevated radon levels. National Radon Awareness Week is a great time to schedule this important safety procedure.

Presently, the EPA recommends actions be taken to reduce radon concentrations if tested levels exceed four picocuries per liter of air (4 pCi/L). However, exposure levels as low as 2 pCi/L may be concentrated enough to cause health problems.

Radon testing is not expensive or time-consuming. Additionally, if excessive amounts of radon are found, solutions for mitigating the problem are fairly inexpensive. To learn more about scheduling a radon inspection and the dangers of this odorless gas, homeowners are urged to call 1-800-NO-RADON.
